The shift to more intelligent walkers is happening even sooner than some fans expected. With more intelligent zombies, it will be harder to have slow episodes because the survivors will constantly be on the move. One complaint about the series is how some episodes have dragged on and become monotonous.

That’s why it's upgrading its walkers into… um … Runners? Climbers? If nothing else, better zombies will make TWD more fast-paced. If TWD's new spinoffs are going to compete with them and draw new viewers, then the franchise needs to up the ante and raise the risk factor. Most of those zombie movies and shows have fast-moving, halfway intelligent zombies. Zombie-based series are plentiful too, with Resident Evil, Z Nation, The Last of Us and All of Us Are Dead being success stories. Netflix has its new Army of the Dead franchise and whole category of zombie movies.

The zombie genre has become much more popular in the past decade, and other networks and streamers are trying to take advantage of that fact. However, the reason for upgraded zombies is pretty obvious. How the franchise will justify the absence of intelligent and physically-capable zombies in a decade-long stretch of TWD could be complicated. For longtime fans of the franchise, the scene was similar to the intelligent walkers that defined Season 1 of TWD.

In that scene, a woman was killed and reanimated, which TWD had shown on countless occasions - but this time she came to life much quicker than normal, and she immediately remembered her attacker and literally ran after him. That all changed in the post-credits scene for The Walking Dead: World Beyond. They were nothing more than mindless, wandering corpses with the simple purpose of feeding an insatiable quest for flesh and blood. For years, the walkers on TWD existed as a modern interpretation of the George Romero-style zombies first seen in Night of the Living Dead.
